How is your
resume's content? Does it say everything
that needs to be said? Are the dates accurate?
Spelling OK? Grammar? Customize your resume
objective according to the type of job you
are applying for.
Can it withstand close scrutiny? Any unanswered
questions? Any resume mines (e.g. using
an email address tied to a personal Web
site containing less than flattering information)?
Does the job progression make sense? (Even
if your job history is presented accurately,
if it does not make sense - overlapping
dates for full-time employment for example
- you risk having your resume summarily
discarded. Does your employment history
show growth and increasing responsibility?

your Resume Files |
Heed the advice
outlined in this section or your entire
job search could be in jeopardy. Here are
a few potential pitfalls:
Viruses. If your resume contains a computer
virus, it may be deleted. At the very least,
you will lose "face" in the eyes
of the recruiter.
A simple formatting mistake in the HTML
used to build a Web resume can prevent it
from displaying properly in certain browsers.
Sometimes a minor error can cause your resume
to disappear completely when viewed in some
versions of Netscape browsers.
Some versions of AOL software will compress
email files above a certain size even if
the email does not have any attachments.
This means that recipients (human or mechanical)
will have to unzip your resume before they
can read it. The average recruiter will
not fire up his WinZip application just
to read your resume.
Emailed resumes should be saved in a format
that provides enough features to ensure
readability and old enough to assure ubiquity
in corporate environments. Save your resume
as Rich Text Format (i.e. "Word 97-2000
& 6.0/95 - RTF") to ensure that
it can be read by most recipients. But be
careful! Even RTF files can cause problems
if emailed using Outlook because of the
winmail.dat demon. Here's the straight scoop
from the folks at Microsoft: "SYMPTOMS:
When you use Microsoft Outlook to send messages
through the Internet with attachments and
you use the Microsoft Outlook Rich Text
format, some recipients report that the
message includes an additional file called
the Winmail.dat file. The Winmail.dat file
is usually very small, but you cannot open
it in the message. The original message
attachment is not always separate from the
Winmail.dat file attachment, and may be
included in the Winmail.dat file attachment.
CAUSE This problem occurs
because the Winmail.dat file is used to
preserve formatting that the sending client
includes in the message, but the receiving
client does not recognize the Winmail.dat
file. In Outlook, the Winmail.dat file includes
Rich Text Formatting (RTF) instructions.
This type of formatting is used with the
Microsoft Outlook Rich Text format and when
you use Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor.
"
In short, if you are not aware of this problem,
you can send out hundreds, or thousands,
of resumes with absolutely zero success
because the recipients cannot read your
resume and/or cover letter attachments.
Test your ASCII (text) documents to make
sure that they display properly in emails
and online resume submission forms. A good
solution: use a free email service such
as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail. Set up a free
email account and email the resume to yourself.
Use the free virus check to test it for
viruses. |
