Keywords
That you should have a keyword-rich resume goes without saying—the question is how to implement the right keywords in an optimal manner. Before you start, be aware that keywords are not as important as key phrases. If your resume ends up in an electronic database hiring managers and recruiters will probably conduct a keyword and key phrase search against it because key phrases can increase the relevance of their search results. Consider the words "education" and "administration". An applicant with experience in both may not interest an employer looking for a candidate with experience in "education administration".

The best place to find relevant keywords and key phrases for your field is in job descriptions and employment advertisements. Some resume writers suggest creating a keyword list in electronic resumes—bad idea. Keyword lists are a lazy and somewhat ineffective solution. If you are successful, a human being will read your electronic resume. Many people might be put off by an apparent attempt at manipulation. Besides, many applicant database programs have software that is smart enough to detect keyword lists and penalize them. It is much more effective and honest to place the keywords where they belong—in the body of your resume. This of course requires hard work and creativity but is important if your resume must pass the scrutiny of humans and computers.

Objectives and Profiles--What to do?
There is no such thing as an effective resume that fits all positions. Your resume cannot, and should not, be all things to all people - it must have focus. Your resume should be customized to meet the requirements of each position you apply for. Customize your key selling points and place them in the objective or profile area of the resume.

Recruiters do not like to see an objective or profile that does not match the position applied for. If you would like to work as a rocket scientist, say so. A resume that belongs to someone seeking "a challenging position with a dynamic organization that will allow me to employ my extensive skills and abilities to the fullest", could easily end up in NASA's recycling bin. Yes, NASA does recycle—resumes at least.

Silly Resume Tricks
Avoid gimmicks and deception in their entirety because they do not work and can be counterproductive. Here are a few examples of ploys that fail miserably and only serve to annoy:

  - Faux letters of introduction claiming that a mutual acquaintance recommends that the recipient review your resume with extra care. "Long time no see" variants of faux cover letters are equally irritating and useless.
  - Resume broadcasting via email with multiple recipients in the "to:", "cc:" or "bcc:" fields. Resumes received this way are treated as spam (i.e. deleted).
  - Resumes emailed from a computer with its date set in the future. If the recipient sorts his/her email by date sent, the resume can stay at the top of the inbox for days or weeks. This is no way to stand out—experienced recruiters recognize this as a sign of desperation and delete the email (and resume) immediately.
  - Resumes that do not show dates of employment may pass a ten second scan but cannot withstand a more thorough review. Such resumes annoy because they insult the reviewers intelligence with predictable results.

An honest approach, based on sound resume writing principles, is a much more effective way of generating promising interviews.
