Practice competition avoidance
When searching online, apply for jobs that are less competitive by searching deep and considering the boring. If you run a search on a generic keyword (e.g. "sales" or "construction") in an online job board, your search results could exceed one thousand. Consider browsing all the jobs that are returned because most job seekers will not browse beyond four or five hundred jobs.
Consider applying for positions with boring job descriptions—the description might be boring but the job might be hot. Some recruiters and hiring managers do not know how to write an interesting job description.
Keep yourself affordable
Employers hire recruiting agencies like Think Resources in order to hide the employer's identity, or to help candidates for positions that are difficult to fill. Occasionally, an employer will advertise a position and also work with outside agencies in order to increase the applicant pool.
Occasionally lazy recruiters from agencies will post the company's job requisition verbatim on an online job board. If you are considering responding to identical job advertisements placed by an employer and a recruiting agency you should apply direct to the employer.
Bypass the lazy agency and go to the source. If you apply through the agency, you increase your cost to the company by thousands of dollars and make yourself less competitive. Recruiting agency fees range between 20 and 35 percent of a candidate's annual salary. Some recruiters are so lazy that they sometimes leave the name of the employer in the job description. Take some keywords from the description and search for the original job ad.
Beware of any agency recruiter who says that he or she can "get you into" a particular company. Agency recruiters find candidates for employers, not the other way around.
